Bootle (pronounced /ˈbuːtəl/) is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England, which in 2001 had a population of 98,449.
Historically part of Lancashire, Bootle's economy and geography has been centred on the docks and their associated industries for decades. Originally a small hamlet, the mid-19th c. industrial expansion of Liverpool led to the rapid growth of Bootle following the arrival of the railroad and the construction of the docks. In the 1960s and 70s unemployment grew and population declined; recently, large-scale renewal projects were begun to regenerate the local economy.
